I mentioned the other day that I had some leftover fabric from my sofa makeover. At the last minute, I decided to give this chair a makeover. The upholsterer gave me a great deal on the labor cost, so I took my chair in to be reupholstered.

The chair has changed a lot over the years. I inherited it from my mom. It's been in my possession for over 16 years.
Of course it didn't look that terrible when I received it! Long story short, my old cat used it as her scratching post. After that it accumulated some mold and mildew after being stored in the garage.

Then I recovered it using some inexpensive fabric that I didn't love.
It was my first time and I did a horrible job, but I'm glad I tried!
Before Picture: 2nd Attempt |
The second time around I was so frustrated I almost gave up. What a job! The backrest and the arms were so complicated. I've come to realize how much I dislike reupholstering.
But since then I outgrew the fabric and wanted a change...
As often as I like to redecorate, a neutral fabric was the way to go.
I'm very happy with my new chair!
They did an awesome job!
Lately I've been decorating with neutrals and adding in texture and a hint of color.
With the changes my house feels lighter and airier.
My style has evolved over the years and I finally found my groove.

It looks fantastic Brandi! Yes, I too love neutrals on upholstered pieces so I can change things up. I have a chair in my office that has a bright bold pattern and it is starting to get to me! Looks like it might be time for a makeover. I can totally relate to tastes changing. I was only in my early 20s when we bought our home. Let's just say wedgewood blue and wallpaper were all the rage!
ReplyDeleteIt looks really great, love the pillow too!
ReplyDeleteI love the neutral. It looks classic and timeless in that fabric.
ReplyDeleteI am so impressed you did it twice! But I have to admit, the pro job looks amazing. And I do love that fabric. How fun that you get to change so many things all a the same time. What will you do when it's all done?
ReplyDeleteAll the Best,
marian
The chair looks fabulous! Neutral was definitely the way to go. They did an awesome job... :)
ReplyDeleteThe chair is amazing and I love the pillow too. Have you noticed how your groove changes over time? Mine does anyway. :)
ReplyDeleteHey Brandi you should give us tips on how to choose the right re-upholsterer! I have a lot of pieces that need this but I don't know how to look and how to choose! Love your 'new' pieces!
ReplyDeleteThe reupholster is very nice!! How much does the labor cost?
ReplyDelete$150 for the chair only.
DeleteYour piece doesn't look so bad, Brandi. The fabric is so trendy right now and has been for a while. I can see why you were drawn to it. Your upholsterer did a wonderful job transforming your chair with the left over fabric. After all, she is a pro and probably whipped this up in no time. Neutrals in furniture covers always work best. Have fun switching out your pillows for a change in décor.
ReplyDeleteOh, wow, Brandi. I loved the colors of your second attempt, but I enjoy the clean lines of the newly reupholstered chair. The upholsterers did a fantastic job. The pillow is amazing too. Fabulousness!
ReplyDeleteYour chair turned out great and I really like the neutral fabric and the piping. It really gave this chair a whole new look!
ReplyDeleteYour chair looks great! I can't imagine trying to recover anything. :) I'd mess it up for sure. My hubby however, actually recovered our reclining wing back chair. I don't know how he did it. Anyway, I'm leaning more toward neutrals too. It's so much fun to mix it up with pillows and things like that. Not to mention how much easier it makes it to incorporate holiday decor. :)
ReplyDeleteThe chair looks awesome Brandi. You have definitely found your groove!
ReplyDeleteLove the way the chair turned out!! Looks fabulous!!
ReplyDeleteSusie
Wow! That chair looks great! I am so impressed! :) Great color choice, too!
ReplyDeleteHey, at least you tried Brandy! Love the chair, so I guess it would be better to go neutral, you will have to give a home tour soon:)
ReplyDeleteI would never have attempted this the first time! I love the neutral color you have on it now.
ReplyDeleteHoly moly you are good!
ReplyDeleteLove the new fabric. Great texture and the blue pillow is perfect.
Another beautiful job! The neutral fabric makes the lines of the chair sing.
ReplyDeleteKudos to you for trying to do it yourself multiple times. Upholstering is crazy hard and tedious, especially on a chair like that!
first, a good friend of mine gave me an antique chair that my cat turned into her own scratch post - so i can feel ya on that. second, i like the striped chair. you did an awesome job. third, like you, i love neutrals. you can add so much pop of color when you decorate with neutrals. and fourth, i love your new upholstered chair AND the pillow. such a lovely color blue. you go girl! cheers!!
ReplyDeleteof course I love the chair makeover. It looks so mature and I know you are going to love the neutral fabric for years to come!
ReplyDeleteYour chair looks great Brandi! Upholstery is not easy. Kudos to you for doing a great job on both tries. I don't blame you for having the pros take on your couch and chair though. It's good to keep frustration and aggravation at bay whenever possible lol.
ReplyDeleteThe chair looks great Brandi! It reminds me of my two banker chairs that are in my attic waiting to be upholstered. Love the blue pillow against the neutral fabric.
ReplyDeleteHi Brandi,
ReplyDeleteI love...love...love that chair. And I love the pillow that's in it. Thanks for sharing this.
Another fabulous job with the furniture re-do. :)
ReplyDeleteFinding a good reupholsterer is key! This chair was worth saving! Love the fabric choice, the neutral will be so easy to switch up by just adding a pillow or a throw!

Brandi,
ReplyDeleteOh Yes, I like this one the best. It's so light and pretty. And the blue pillow adds a pop of color. When I saw this, I remembered the chair that I received from my aunt, and I never did get it upholstered. Now, I really wish I had that chair. What a treasure you will always have from your mom.

Looks so good! Clean lines and neutral and you can add a pop of color with a pillow like your blue one. Nice work!
ReplyDeletelove it girl - love that you have had it so long and it came from you mom :) I'm with you on changing the house up with the light neutrals too.. can't wait to see you next week!!
ReplyDeleteOK, you've convinced me that reupholstering/re-covering is the way to go! What a huge difference! I agree with you on going with a neutral for the "fixed" pieces and then jazzin' it up with color and pattern via pillows and throws and things that are easily replaced or changed out. I've gone that direction, too. It makes sense! Your upholsterer did a fantastic job. I have no idea how much something like that costs, but it's worth looking into. I like the shape of a couple of chairs we have, but I'm not in love with the fabric anymore.
ReplyDeleteI commend you for even giving the chair's transformation a try on your own! I would never have had the gumption to go there!!! You did a good job, but I guess professional upholsterers have tools and tricks that can go that extra mile. No fault of yours.
Your wonderful, sentimentally cherished chair has a new life!
What a great makeover Brandi!
ReplyDeleteAmazing, love it! I agree, the neutral is such a great pick! I love the added pillow too. Can you come over and decorate my place now? :)
ReplyDeleteSo pretty! I love the light and airy fabric.. but I have to say, you did a pretty good job on your own girl! Whew, that second photo.. that chair had been through something! It's so cool how you transformed it but it still has lots of memories for you!
ReplyDeleteit looks great... having an upholsterer around is the best thing next to sliced bread :-) ..
ReplyDeletePerfect transformation! Love the chevron print.
ReplyDeleteI'm groovin' right along with you, lady - your newly transformed chair is a keeper! I am glad you have held onto it all of these years - it has beautiful lines and the new fabric is just sweet. It's perfect with your lovely re-done sofa. Thanks for the blog comment the other day; always happy when you come to visit! Have a great week & a happy 4th. Jane
ReplyDeleteThat looks awesome! Love it! You should link up some of your awesome creativity to my weekly In The Studio link-ups!
ReplyDeleteGreat decision! With the pretty lines of that chair, a neutral was perfect! xoxo
ReplyDeleteLove this! The neutral tone goes so well with the print cushion and will not date.
ReplyDeletePerfect colors for you decor, they did a super job. Who did you use?

Wowzer! The chair is beautiful! I love neutrals too, then you are free to add color and change it up whenever you want. The blue patterned pillow is lovely.
ReplyDeleteLooks fabulous! And you know I'm right there with you on the neutral base, colorful accents plan!
ReplyDeleteI LOVE the linen chair and pillow!!
ReplyDeleteHi Brandi, LOVE the chair makeover with the linen and the wonderful pillow. This is one of my favorites to do keeping it neutral adding color with the accents.
ReplyDeleteYou are one talented lady my friend.
Thanks for sharing the inspiration.

Oh my goodness, it looks beautiful!! That's what my style has evolved to also, neutral on bigger, main pieces with color added in through accessories.
ReplyDeleteWow your chair looks amazing. Those arms must have been challenging to recover.
ReplyDeleteAli xx
Yes! Love that you used the same fabric as your couch. It turned out lovely and again loving that this was your moms chair.
ReplyDeleteHi Brandi, how have been?

They did do an awesome job, but the times that you did it were pretty darn amazing, too. That could not have been an easy job. You are so talented . . . in so many different ways. Brandi, you rock, big time!!!
ReplyDeleteLove this chair makeover!! First of all, the fact that you tackled the upholstery yourself in the past is just amazing! I wouldn't have been so brave. This neutral is such a pretty fabric with great texture. Looks perfect with that pillow, and I'm sure you'll have fun mixing with other pieces as well! A classic piece you'll enjoy for years to come.
