As the growing season comes to an end, now is great time to stop in your local garden center to save money on flowering perennials, trees and shrubs.
I recently went to Home Depot to return an item. Before heading back home, I decided to quickly walk through the garden center. Towards the end of the aisle I noticed a few yellow price tags and became very excited!
Limelight hydrangeas were on sale for half off, as well as a few other varieties.
I grabbed an empty shopping cart and began loading up.
Limelight hydrangeas are a beautiful shrub. They are a type of Panicle Hydrangea. The flower heads can grow up to 12 inches long. The flowers start off lime green, then a creamy white.
In the fall, they gradually turn pink. I have the perfect spot for them in my yard.
I plan to plant four of them in a row, to create a hedge full of beautiful blooms outside of our fence.
I purchased three more of another variety.
Not quite sure where they will land, but the price was too good to pass up.
Hydrangeas are one of my favorite flowers. They make such a statement in any garden. I love walking outside with my pruners in the morning to clip a few and create a simple arrangement.
Here's a look at the hydrangeas I have planted in my front flower bed. They have really evolved over the years.

Be sure to always check the clearance racks. Consider these tips when shopping for discounted flowers...
I usually avoid purchasing annuals, no matter how cheap they are. I prefer to pot healthy annuals in the spring, so I can enjoy them throughout the growing season.
Don't be discouraged by the look of the scraggly leaves. With a little TLC they'll come back beautifully next season.
Inspect the flowers for bugs. Spraying with an insecticidal soap can help eliminate an infestation.
Also, think about where the flowers will be planted and select flowers according to their sun/shade requirements.
Lastly--have fun, relax and enjoy the process. You don't have to have a "green thumb" to start a garden. I learned a lot by trial and error. Every time I've killed a flower it inspires me to do better next time. Happy Gardening!
