As you may or may not recall, we had some water damage in our kitchen caused by our dishwasher. Unfortunately, with our high deductible and a lot of insurance mumbo jumbo, we weren't left with a lot of money for repairs. But, I'm not complaining! We made the most of our estimate! We found a great deal on flooring and were able to update our cabinets with moulding. The process was long, but worthwhile and I'm excited to show you the updates that were made!
Before pictures of our cabinets. As I mentioned before, they were my least favorite thing in the house. I can remember second guessing myself after we put in our offer for the house knowing that the ugly cabinets were apart of the deal!I'm only kidding!!
Our friend came over with his Skilsaw and made all the cuts for moulding and flooring. While my husband and I did all the painting.
I love the barn door inspired cabinets. I initially saw the idea while browsing Pinterest. Then clicked my way over to Lisa's blog, A Vintage Vine for all the details. I can't thank Lisa enough for the inspiration! She has such a beautiful blog. Her taste and her home are incredibly gorgeous!
Before pictures of our cabinets. As I mentioned before, they were my least favorite thing in the house. I can remember second guessing myself after we put in our offer for the house knowing that the ugly cabinets were apart of the deal!
Our friend came over with his Skilsaw and made all the cuts for moulding and flooring. While my husband and I did all the painting.
And now! What a difference a little moulding makes, eh?! We decided to keep handles/knobs off of the doors. The cabinet doors have grooves underneath of them for easy opening.
Although we painted the cabinets, the wall colors remained the same.
Once we updated the cabinets, the old rug no longer seemed to work in the space.
I purchased this jute rug and I couldn't be happier! It fits the space nicely.
I also changed out the curtains. I made simple window treatments, but sewing them proved to be a little difficult. I am amazed that they came out even in length.
The previous curtains were my first attempt at sewing and it showed. ; ) The curtains were actually made from a sheet set. I used the pillowcases for window treatments in my laundry room as seen here.
I almost went with this fabric for the curtains. As much I liked the fabric, it didn't work for the kitchen.
All the plates on the wall were purchased at thrift stores. You can see the inexpensive way I hung them on the wall here.
A plate holder also doubles as a place to keep my cutting boards. Laminate counters scratch easily, having the cutting boards nearby helps to prevent further scratches.
I really hoped to add some type of open shelving to this empty wall. I even found a trio at the thrift store for a great price! But once my husband helped me hang them on the wall, the shelves made the room look cluttered. So they came down! All the ceramic pitchers I've been collecting over the last few years to display on said shelves are now being stored in the cabinets. Makes me so sad.
I purchased the chair prints from West Elm a couple of years ago. I found an inexpensive frame at Ross to display them in. The planters on the shelf were 49 cents each, at IKEA.
The cabinets extend to the ceiling.
I use my small stepladder to reach the contents as needed.
*A huge thank-you to Beth @ Home Stories A2Z, Kristin @ My Uncommon Slice of Suburbia, Stephanie Lynn @ Under the Table and Dreaming, Home Dzine and Kristi @ Addicted to Decorating for featuring my kitchen on their blogs!

ReplyDeleteThe updates are just delightful. The cabinet updates really set things off nicely. I am really loving the back-splash.
ReplyDeleteWow!!! Looks like a different kitchen. Was your backsplash done tile by tile or did it come on a mesh piece and you just added the grout. I've been wanting a backsplash but haven't seen anything I particularly liked.
ReplyDeleteWe have that same table. I have been dying to paint it..hmmm. Maybe in the new year.
Great job!

The molding made an AMAZING difference! What a beautiful kitchen! Great Job :) Love that jute rug by the way.
ReplyDeleteLooks wonderful- what a great makeover!! Would love for you to share at Feathered Nest Friday sometime too!
ReplyDeleteI found my way here by way of Better After (my flat cabinets are in major need of a lift) and I have to say: you have the best blog title ever. Takes me back to the summer of '87, me and my sisters riding in the back of our family's yellow Oldsmobile station wagon, The System blasting on the radio.
ReplyDeleteLooks good. The molding on the cabinets changed the look dramatically.
ReplyDeleteWhat an amazing difference the molding has made! Looks brand spanking new. I love the smaller cupboards above the larger ones.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful! What a difference moulding makes. I too redid my cabinets adding moulding and beadboard wallpaper. I love the results! I haven't quite finished them, but if you want you can get a sneek peak at them here: http://greenwillowpond.blogspot.com/2011/09/no-turning-back-new-looking-countertops.html
ReplyDeleteThis seriously looks like a new kitchen! I think this is one of the best makeovers I have seen in a long time! Just gorgeous!
ReplyDeleteLacy
If I had a dishwasher, I'd hope that it broke and flooded MY kitchen - LOL! You certainly took the 'lemons' and made 'lemonade' -- this is just beautiful. The cabinets are my favorite -- I hate mine too -- awful, 70's laminate and I hope to someday paint them and add moulding to update. Lovely choices for the curtains and the rug too.
ReplyDeleteLove your kitchen!!! Question: Your counter tops are fantastic -- WHAT KIND ARE THEY? Love the colour too:) Pretty sweet curtains. Thanks for the inspiration.
ReplyDeleteA.M. Knight- Thanks for your visit! The counter tops are laminate.
ReplyDeleteI am shocked that the counters are laminate --- looks so beautiful and love the chunky edge. What brand/colour are they?
ReplyDeleteBrandi your kitchen looks amazing! You guys did a fabulous job on the cabinets. Every element works together wonderfully.
ReplyDeleteWhat a gorgeous update! I love that you took the existing cabinets and made them look fantastic.
ReplyDeleteYou have my kitchen cupboards and I am in Cali. Have new floor and stainless sink and 3 way spray faucet, countertops, dishwasher (moved fridge to make room, and really didnt have money to repalce cupboards (solid wood from 1950's) but now I know what another choice is,was thinking of covering with waines cotting, now I have another choice, thanks they came our great.
ReplyDeleteWOW! that moulding really transformed those cabinets! looks fantastic. Just started following along!
ReplyDeleteFantastic job! LOVE the new look. I am struggling with how to rennovate my kitchen.
ReplyDeleteYour kitchen is beautiful! Love the x's on the doors : o )
ReplyDeleteTalk about sparing the planet and not throwing out a bunch of wood!!! Great Idea!!!
ReplyDeleteIt looks Great.
Your kitchen makover looks great. Could you tell me what kind of trim you used for the cabinets?
ReplyDeleteI like your plate hanger idea, too.
Fabulous redo! Your kitchen has 10 fold more interest now. It's like eye candy. Love how you decorate too. Simple but striking and love the new carpet.
ReplyDeleteLove the moulding on the cabinets! I want to do this to my 1980s laminate cabinets. What did you use to attach the moulding? Thanks!
ReplyDeleteHi Renee, thanks for your visit. The moulding was attached with a nail gun, then covered with caulk. Should you have anymore questions email me. donotdisturbthisgroove@yahoo.com
ReplyDeleteBrandi- I found your blog through pinterest. We are looking to do a similar kitchen cabinet upgrade (we have flat panel cabinets too). What kind of moulding did you use for the cabinets? We are not sure what kind to buy. Thanks so much for sharing!
ReplyDeleteNow that is a kitchen that makes cooking in a JOY! LOVE the trim you use. I wish I would have done that to my old cabinets. I bought quarter round trim and attached it to my doors about 3 inches in from the edge of the doors. Then painted the cabinets white. I am getting so many ideas from your blog. You make me want to tackle my half bath now and remove that wallpaper. I have never heard of bead board wallpaper... Gotta get some of that.
ReplyDeletePlease tell me where the thrift store is that you find some of your amazing items. LOVE those plates.
Seriously!! How have I not seen this before! They look absolutley amazing! Great job!
ReplyDeleteBrandi, that molding made an amazing difference! I'm so glad you shared this. Thanks for linking up :)
ReplyDeleteWhat a terrific upgrade to the cabinets. I am totally in love with the two that have the crosses. That makes it look so unique and wonderful. Love your dog.
ReplyDeleteWOW....what an amazing change. Awesome job. I painted mine yrs ago cause they were that cheap builder grade stuff and it made a big difference. ....but lately I have been looking at them and wondering what I could do now....thanks for an idea, I might give it a try.
ReplyDeleteWow!! What an amazing transformation! My kitchen, sadly, looks identical to your before pictures. I have a question, how many lengths of moulding did you have to purchase? Oh, and I love that your left the drawers plain! Thanks!!!

Hi, I have a similar kitchen layout
ReplyDeleteand am always excited to see what some one else has done.
Love the curtain you made, too. I can never seem to find
a curtain/style at the stores that I like so I make them, too.
I'm not a sewing expert either!
Wonderful job you did and thanks for sharing your post.

WOW! This is such a lovely and soothing space now! Isnt it funny how a problem can turn into such a good thing? Just over a year ago we had a fire in the kitchen of our 1860 home(while we werent home). Thanks to a neighbor the damage was minimal but we still had to endure weeks of our girls living elsewhere and a $5000 cleanup for smoke damage. The best part though? Although the kitchen didnt get "renovated" just putting white paint (over the red) on the walls was enough brightening up to make me appreciate what we (still) had and inspired me to get back into cooking so I could enjoy the space again.
ReplyDeleteYou've done a lovely job!
Oh My dilly..I'm dieing here. yes. I am late to this party very late. your kitchen it gorgeous. As you can see I am slowly working my way through your blog and I am sure I am one of those annoying people who doesn't have a reply blog that you like...I'll work on it in a minute.
ReplyDeleteYou are amazing Brandi, I shall now stalk your blog not just read it!
I just spray painted a basket and turned my self a fabby shade of espresso.....end of me getting my craft on for the year!
we are getting ready to tear into our kitchen and the trim is a great idea! beautiful job on your kitchen, brandi:)
ReplyDeleteI know the post is a little old, but just wondering what moulding you used. Or even if you could share size detail information.
ReplyDeleteHi kcasey41! Thanks for your visit. I don't have much information about the type of moulding that was used because we didn't do the work ourselves. Our friend came over with a few samples and we chose what we liked best. I do know that it was purchased at Home Depot and is 2 inches wide. Hope that helps! Should you have any more questions email me at donotdisturbthisgroove@yahoo.com
ReplyDeleteShut it!!!! You rocked that kitchen girl......I love the styling and how they turned out.
ReplyDeleteThis looks great! Could you tell me how you hung the plates on the side of your cabinets? Thanks!
ReplyDeleteHi ssbutterfly01! The plates were hung using super glue and paper clips. You can read more about how I hung them here,
ReplyDeletehttp://bet1975.blogspot.com/2010/10/paper-clips-to-plate-hangers.html
Thanks so much for stopping by. Should you have anymore questions email me at donotdisturbthisgroove@yahoo.com
You did an AMAZING job! What type of primer and paint did you use? Did you put a polyurethane or something like it to protect them? How are they holding up (any chips in the paint etc?) Is the finish glossy or matte? Thanks for posting this...it is inspiring!!
ReplyDeleteI love your remodel! I knew that I wanted to paint my cabinets white because my appliances are white but I couldn't figure out the rest of the kitchen. I really like the beadboard look. I like the colors that you used for the counter tops and back splash. I already have similar flooring, kitchen sink, faucets, and the exact same light fixture as above the table! I think I'm going to paint the walls a neutral color too and just add pops of color with accessories. I have PLENTY of accessories in storage.
ReplyDeleteThank you for your inspiration.
