My mailbox was looking rough, don't you think?! Mildew, rust and peeling paint.

I've wanted to give it a makeover for quite some time. The weather was beautiful this weekend, making it perfect for outdoor projects.

I picked up some supplies from Home Depot and got to work. I decided to stain the post after cleaning off most of the mildew(I used Varathane- Kona). I unscrewed the mailbox from the post then painted it with Rust-Oleum Hammered, copper-spray paint. Once everything was dry, I gave the post and the mailbox a clear coat for weather protection.

I ordered the vinyl number decal from Etsy.
I love to see flowers growing by the mailbox! With no design in mind, I added a few plants and flowers. I finished it off with a layer of mulch. Instant curb appeal!

Hopefully they will hold up well throughout the summer and fill in nicely.

Now if I could only keep my neighbor's Chihuahua from peeing on them. Grr!

Hi Brandi: It's amazing what paint can do for a pick me up. I'm sure the mail delivery person is happy too. The green Hosta plants are easy to care for. They grow quite large and spread a lot. If you see that this is happening, and you don't want that, pull out the baby shoots. Also, you can razor them down in the winter. They will go dormant, and pop back up in the Springtime. In the summer, they will also bloom a long thin purple flower in the middle of the plant. Enjoy looking at your new project everytime you get your mail.

ReplyDeleteI love it! Try sprinkling red pepper flakes around your flowers if you dont want dogs peeing on them. They always sniff first so a noseful of that should keep them away! My mom used to sprinkle that stuff on hers to keep our neighbors dog out of her flowers :)

ReplyDeleteGreat upgrade Brandi! I love the new paint and the flowers. If you know what time the neighbors dog visits, you might set up a sprinkler and turn it on just as he/she starts to sprinkle! It won't hurt the dog, but it will startle it. A couple times of that and he/she may decide to find another spot, hopefully in the neighbor's yard!

ReplyDeleteThis is really very pretty! My mailbox did finally get a nice new post but since it sits on an unpaved country road, I can't put pretty flowers at its base, although last summer there were wildflowers growing around it.
