My mailbox was looking rough, don't you think?! Mildew, rust and peeling paint.
I've wanted to give it a makeover for quite some time. The weather was beautiful this weekend, making it perfect for outdoor projects.
I picked up some supplies from Home Depot and got to work. I decided to stain the post after cleaning off most of the mildew(I used Varathane- Kona). I unscrewed the mailbox from the post then painted it with Rust-Oleum Hammered, copper-spray paint. Once everything was dry, I gave the post and the mailbox a clear coat for weather protection.
I ordered the vinyl number decal from Etsy.
I love to see flowers growing by the mailbox! With no design in mind, I added a few plants and flowers. I finished it off with a layer of mulch. Instant curb appeal!
Hopefully they will hold up well throughout the summer and fill in nicely.
Now if I could only keep my neighbor's Chihuahua from peeing on them. Grr!

ReplyDeleteThis looks really great, wish I had a mailbox to make over!
ReplyDeleteLooks fabulous Brandi! Makes me want to go and make mine look better. :)
ReplyDeleteGreat job !!!

Now that's a great before and after project. You did an awesome job and I love the flowers.
ReplyDeleteIt looks great, Brandi! I love flowers by the mailbox too. It's amazing what a difference a little paint and flowers can do. :)
ReplyDeletePretty improvement!
ReplyDeleteVery nice and such a dramatic difference. A fresh coat of paint will work wonders!
ReplyDeleteVery nice!! Sadly mine looks for similar to your before! :( You've inspired me to add it to my list!

ReplyDeleteWhat a simple yet lovely transformation. I love it!

Hi Brandi: It's amazing what paint can do for a pick me up. I'm sure the mail delivery person is happy too. The green Hosta plants are easy to care for. They grow quite large and spread a lot. If you see that this is happening, and you don't want that, pull out the baby shoots. Also, you can razor them down in the winter. They will go dormant, and pop back up in the Springtime. In the summer, they will also bloom a long thin purple flower in the middle of the plant. Enjoy looking at your new project everytime you get your mail.
ReplyDeleteIt looks so beautiful Brandi. That's what I tell people that it does not take much to improve a space, to improve something.
ReplyDeleteI wish the weather here in CT we better, most of our weekends have been rainy & windy :(
Hi Brandi,
ReplyDeleteI like this quick makeover! I need to do the same to my mailbox area. As always, I love your decor ideas, as they inspire me. Much joy!
That looks wonderful Brandi! So glad you went with Kona color and copper. Beautiful transformation.
ReplyDeleteLove the new look..I had to chuckle at the ending comment.. grrr.. :-)
ReplyDeleteI love it! Try sprinkling red pepper flakes around your flowers if you dont want dogs peeing on them. They always sniff first so a noseful of that should keep them away! My mom used to sprinkle that stuff on hers to keep our neighbors dog out of her flowers :)
ReplyDeleteWow Brandi, that looks amazing. I love the bronze paint you chose for the mailbox and the flowers look beautiful too.
ReplyDeleteWow! Totally looks like a new mail box and post! Love that copper finish! :)
ReplyDeleteStopping by from over at Marty's - lovely feature and you did a wonderful job with your son's bedroom re-do. I even teared up with you - knowing how fast they grow up. My favorite nephew just turned 17 and is getting whiskers - and it seems like yesterday he was wearing his little sailor's outfit with cute baby white shoes. /sniff sniff/ wipe tears
ReplyDeleteAnyway fabo job on that and on your m ailbox and now I am your newest followers~! So glad to "meet" you and find you!
I love this! Wow! You should turn this into a pin for Pinterest if you havent already! and yay for GA Bloggers :)

ReplyDeleteVisiting from Marty's. Girl you are a genius! I've known it for a while... I follow your instagram. Now following your fantastic blog! Looking forward to hanging out here.
ReplyDeleteGreat makeover! And, your flowers are so lovely! We are starting to see a few blooms here, too--yay! :) T. http://tickledpinkwoman.blogspot.com
ReplyDeleteBy this time next year, you'll have the full complement of flowers and greenery to decorate the base of your mailbox, and your efforts will have paid off big time!!! They already are as it looks so much better with the small plants in place!!! (I wonder if a rubber snake would keep ol' Mr. Chihuahua away?)
ReplyDeletePaint is the wonder drug, isn't it? The new look is really great!!!
Wow, this looks fabulous!! I love the flowers around your mailbox. I think I am going to hit Home Depot this weekend and pick up some plants to put around my mailbox! We may not have grass but I can plant some greenery around the mailbox, right ;)
ReplyDeleteLooking good, Brandi! I never know whether I should plant flowers under the mailbox. I have this image of the poor mail lady getting attacked by bees, lol...I really should ask her if she minds. It looks so "purity" with flowers underneath.
ReplyDeleteThanksfully, mailbox fixing up is not one of my chores for this year but if it was, painting is definitely the way to go. Thanks so much for sharing, Brandi...
Looks awesome. My mailbox could use some attention.
ReplyDeleteThat is actually a very cool makeover Brandi, you sure are a talented person!
ReplyDeleteI love your mailbox landscaping! Hostas are so pretty to me and I like those purple plants too. You did a great job making over your mailbox. Too bad I'm not allowed to do anything to mine since I have an HOA :(
ReplyDeletehi brandi! thank you for stopping by my blog and leaving a comment.
ReplyDeletewow!!! what a makeover!!!! that spray paint is gorgeous. and all finished off, with flowers. you did a great job.
about the chihuahua... if you go back to home depot, betcha' you could find something to make him give your pretty little plot, a wide berth. there must be something, which a dog would not, not, not like the smell of. there must be! :-)
good luck!
tessa~
I am in awe of all planted flowers. Because I'm far too lazy to ever do that and because they're so pretty!
ReplyDeleteI looooove the copper mailbox!! It all looks so good. That is definite curb appeal!
ReplyDeleteSuch a pretty makeover, Brandi! At first I thought you've gotten a new one! Love the copper color ;)
ReplyDeleteGreat makeover; awesome job.
ReplyDeleteLooks like an extreme makeover to me. My mailbox looks naked. Now, let's pray so God can keep the dog away!

Yes, please give my lemon blueberry bread pudding a try. It's so so good . . . and surprisingly, light.
Have a wonderful, beautiful weekend,
Suzanne
PS Your mailbox makeover is awesome! Great job!
What a great looking mailbox and the flowers and greenery really do give it curb appeal. Good job! I was wondering if the greenery was hostas which gets rather big.

ReplyDeleteBrandi,
I'll hire you to decorate my post office box! I loved what you did!
:D
Hi Brandi, what a wonderful makeover. This looks fabulous and your plantings all around is the perfect touch.
ReplyDeleteThank you for stopping by and your kind comment. I am so sorry you lost your mom too. She is looking down and very proud of you.
Blessings to you always.
Hugs!
Great update Brandi! My mailbox looks way too much like your sad "before". Love the copper paint and the decal and I agree - flowers around the mailbox make a world of difference!
ReplyDeleteI so need to do this to our mailbox....duh, why didn't I think of this before? The copper would accent my house very nicely. Thanks for sharing with us, Brandi!
ReplyDeleteGreat upgrade Brandi! I love the new paint and the flowers. If you know what time the neighbors dog visits, you might set up a sprinkler and turn it on just as he/she starts to sprinkle! It won't hurt the dog, but it will startle it. A couple times of that and he/she may decide to find another spot, hopefully in the neighbor's yard!
ReplyDeleteHi Brandi,
ReplyDeleteWhat a great makeover! I just love that copper color against the Kona stain, and your flowers look beautiful! I couldn't help laughing about the Chihuahua comment! Have a great day, Brandi!
Val @ artsybuildinglady.blogspot.ca
Love this make-over and trust me... mine could use a good make-over too. The box anyway... the are is shared with two other neighbors, so the flowers may or may not be a problem for them... but yours sure looks mighty spiffy! XOX Happy Mom's Day!
ReplyDeleteA beautiful job on the mailbox Brandi!
ReplyDeleteThank you for stopping by my blog and leaving a comment! I am your newest follower.
This is a great idea! I love how it turned out!
ReplyDeleteYou did a great job and those flowers should triple in coverage over the summer ! :)
ReplyDeleteIt came out AWESOME!!!! And the plants you close especially the hosta will hold up right into Fall!!...:)JP

Yes, keep your eyes open for the sweet yellow French beans. I think you'll love them too :0)
Have a great week,
Suzanne
LOOOOVE the copper sis. Awesome makeover:)
ReplyDeleteYour mail box looks great with the new coat of paint and plantings. Good luck with your neighbor's dog. :)
ReplyDeleteThis is really very pretty! My mailbox did finally get a nice new post but since it sits on an unpaved country road, I can't put pretty flowers at its base, although last summer there were wildflowers growing around it.
ReplyDeleteGood job! It looks wonderful! You are so creative!
ReplyDeleteNice work Brandi!!! Looks so awesome
ReplyDeleteBrandi, Congrats! You'll be featured this week at Simple & Sweet Fridays. Thanks so much for sharing.
