Soup Can Planters


Early in September, Target started selling special edition Andy Warhol-themed tomato soup cans.  I grew up on tomato soup and grilled cheese, so I picked up a few cans for lunch.  After the soup was gone, the cans were too pretty to throw away.  So after some thought I decided to reuse the cans as planters.

After cleaning the cans, I hammered a few drainage holes at the bottom of each can.  Be careful not to get the labels too wet.  If you should, just allow them to completely dry before moving on.

Then I applied a thin coat of Mod Podge over the labels to seal and protect the surface.

I purchased a few succulents from Home Depot and replanted them in each can.

I love the bright pop of color!




Simple and inexpensive!  What will you create today?

    This is ridiculously cute! :D Those cans ARE pretty. I don't like cans much but this is adorable. Nice job! Today I'm working on 3 more projects all in the process of whitening my home...sprucing up a bland tray, lacing some candle holders and painting an Asian wooden Priestess :D

    YES! I have been trying to ever so carefully peel those labels off the cans and they rip EVERY SINGLE TIME! But these lil planters would look adorbs in my kitchen-thanks bunches for your inspiration and I am pinning it:)

    I didn't grow up on tomato soup, but I did grow up on big helpings of art and art history! I LOVE the Target Andy Warhol soup cans! I picked up a bunch of them myself. Pop art is the best. So glad you found a super cute purpose for your empty cans... :)

    I so remember tomato soup and grilled cheese on our trays at school. I didn't become a fan of tomato soup until later in life. I am going to call my mom to see if she can score a few of these cans for me. I would love to add them as art in my apartment here in Abu Dhabi.

    This is such a neat idea, Brandi! I didn't know Target was selling this limited edition cans! I would have gotten them just to look at the cans, I just love vintage cans and bottles! Your plants are really pretty, always love a touch of green for the house!

    Your Target sells food and soup cans? We really do miss out over here in Australia! These cans are awesome I love the rustic look of succulents in tins, great work :) Iv used empty tins Iv removed the labels on for pen holders and little vases before, though I like the look of the labels left on for these ones.
