In my world, making my house smell like Christmas is just as important as decorating for the holidays. I enjoy walking into my house after the air has been filled with the warm scents of Christmas simmering on the stove.
Not far from my house is a great farmer's market with the best selection of reasonably priced spices. I purchased a few spice containers to create my own holiday potpourri.
A few whole nutmeg
2 Tbsp dried orange peel
1 tsp whole cloves
1 tsp whole allspice
A few dried orange slices
Two cups of water
Place all the ingredients into a saucepan. Fill the saucepan with water and stir to dissolve the dried orange peel. Bring to a boil, then lower the heat and simmer. Be sure to add more water as the water boils down. I refrigerate the leftovers and reuse them for about a week. The smell is wonderful. It truly does make the house smell great!

ReplyDeleteGood Morning Brandi, When I saw your photo of the spices you had bought from the Farmers Market, it instantly transported me back to when I visited my daughter in Atlanta a couple of years ago. She took me to the most fabulous Farmers Market and I bought so many different spices to take home to Cyprus. When I walked in the market the aromas were wonderful. ReplyDeleteWhat a wonderful idea, Brandi! Years ago I used a small crockpot to simmer potpourri - just left the top off. That took out the possibility of me forgetting to add water periodically - which I have done before - more than once. :) Hope you and your family are enjoying this wonderful Christmas season.
ReplyDeleteI used to do this with fresh orange peels, cloves and cinnamon after a realtor told me to put some on the stove during our open house. The house sold in 6 days! In any case, I'll have to try it with the allspice and nutmeg too. It sounds wonderful!
